Patient’s Guide to the Site

The Alliance wants our site to be easily-navigable for anyone who may be caught up in the world of benzodiazepines. Whether you or a loved one has been prescribed benzodiazepines, the following steps will act as a patient’s guide to the site, and will help you to find your way to recovery and a benzodiazepine or Z-drug – free life.

Which Drugs are Benzodiazepines?

Every drug is required to have an FDA-approved “label” or “prescribing information” that lists the manufacturer’s research and testing, problems and limitations. At the end of the FDA-approved document for each medication you will find a section called “Medication Guide”, which is written for patients.

Which “Z-drugs” or “nonbenzodiazepines”

In addition to carrying the same risks of physiological dependence and protracted withdrawal as benzodiazepines, these drugs have been shown to cause bizarre or dangerous sleep behavior. The z-drugs tend to be faster acting and have shorter half-lives than the benzos.

How do Benzodiazepines and Z-drugs Work?

In general, benzos and z-drugs bind to a specific site on the GABA receptor and modulate the receptor such that GABA also attached to the receptor has an increased effect calming the central nervous system.

Are You Experiencing Benzodiazepine Withdrawal Syndrome?

How do you know if you are physiologically dependent on benzos and experiencing a form of withdrawal? Find a relatively simple test here to see if this might be the case.

Basic Benzodiazepine Withdrawal Syndrome Q&A

Many patients have common questions regarding their prescription and use of benzodiazepines, and online searches can result in confusing and contradictory information. The Alliance has compiled the answers to frequently asked questions.

Speaking With Your Medical Provider

It is often difficult for those seeking advice to question a medical expert. If you believe that you are suffering from benzodiazepine withdrawal syndrome, it is imperative to interview your doctor to ensure that (s)he understands the syndrome.

Treatment Centers for Benzodiazepines (Rehab)

Addiction treatment centers tend to address benzodiazepine tapers with fixed protocols and rapid reductions, when, in fact, a slow, flexible process is far more likely to be successful and safer. Look for a center that has a specialized longer-term program for benzodiazepine withdrawal.

Books on Benzodiazepines

Several medical books have been written which focus solely on the problems with benzodiazepines. In addition, many books that discuss the benzodiazepine problems include them as a part of a discussion of the problems with psychotropic drugs.
